About the Role
Zscaler is currently seeking a Director of Software Engineering to lead a newly-formed software development team focused on Cyber Risk. The role involves spearheading the development of data and business intelligence platforms, aimed at identifying, categorizing, remediating, and mitigating security vulnerabilities across all Zscaler products and cloud services.
The primary mission is to create highly available and high-performance distributed systems capable of gathering data from millions of hardware and software assets. These systems will provide Zscaler's security teams with the capability to query and take action on vulnerability-related information.
As the Director of Software Engineering, you will be responsible for assembling a development team to design, code, and maintain these innovative data platforms. Additionally, you will play a crucial role in recruiting and retaining top security talent, nurturing your team and their skills, and contributing to the technical direction of the projects.
Responsibilities
- Formulate a long-term vision for the owned engineering platforms, encompassing vulnerability scanning systems, data transport and analytics, and business intelligence.
- Lead the design and implementation of innovative distributed software platforms for continuous threat assessment, vulnerability identification, risk assessment, and policy compliance across Zscaler software and hardware assets, spanning private and public clouds.
- Oversee development teams utilizing Agile methodologies.
- Uphold high standards of engineering excellence to ensure 24/7 availability and resolve issues at their root cause.
- Collaborate with other engineering teams to address security challenges with minimal disruption to other business functions.
- Recruit, train, and evaluate the performance of direct reports in alignment with corporate policies.
- Aid in the growth of team members through coaching, training, and career development activities.
- Engage with industry experts, vendors, partners, internal staff, and auditors.
- Collaborate effectively within a geographically dispersed team.
- Occasional travel is required, both domestic and international.
Requirements
- Technical expertise: A minimum of 10 years of experience in software development, including at least 5 years in large-scale IaaS/PaaS development on public cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure).
- Management experience: A track record of 5+ years in direct people management, including at least 5 direct reports. Experience in leading and growing teams in remote-working environments, while leveraging Agile practices (experience in leading cross-functional teams is a plus).
- Data engineering and distributed systems: Proficiency in designing, implementing, and operating data engineering platforms and web services, encompassing schema management, data transport (Kafka, SQS), data warehousing and storage (e.g., AWS Redshift, AuroraDB, MySQL, Postgres), data processing (streaming and batch ETL/ELT pipelines, Kinesis, Airflow, Spring batch), data analytics (Spark, Hadoop, BigQuery, Databricks, Snowflake), and business intelligence reports (Tableau, QuickSight).
- Scalable design: Proven experience in designing and managing applications at scale, including operation on millions of endpoints, handling billions of transactions per second, and optimizing for millisecond response times, within autonomous and self-recoverable frameworks.
- Engineering excellence: A demonstrated focus on automation and streamlined engineering efficiency, ensuring applications achieve over 99.9% availability and full-service ownership with 24/7 on-call support.
- Software design and programming: Proficiency in guiding technical strategy and architectures, including a strong grasp of system design and the ability to provide guidance in at least one of the following programming languages: Java, Python, Scala, Golang, Rust.
- Secure development: Strong foundational knowledge in building secure applications, including principles of secure software development lifecycle, authentication/authorization principles, secure data management, and addressing security issues in owned applications.
Desired Skills
- Experience with AWS, including a proven track record of building applications using AWS-native data engineering technologies.
- Experience in managing cross-functional teams, including software developers, devops, and operations.
- Familiarity with building security platforms or supporting product security or vulnerability management functions. This encompasses managing security tools for static code analysis, vulnerability and malware detection, endpoint protection, and software supply chain security.
