In the current job market, with very limited opportunities and full of layoffs, people are struggling to find jobs. Scammers are taking advantage of this situation and fooling job seekers in numerous ways. Recently, our team at TakeOff Talent found some fake job postings and posted on LinkedIn asking if anyone is trapped in these scams. To our surprise, we found multiple people getting trapped, and some people are able to realize that these are scammers.
Well, there is a quote, "A delayed game is forever good, but a rushed game is forever bad." Job seekers in a hurry fall into traps in such scams. The targets of such scammers are usually freshers who are abundant in the current job market. As fresher openings are currently negligible in terms of the number of freshers looking for a job, they generally don't notice details and blindly apply for positions without checking details about the job opening and the company.
Usually, scammers are creating fake company page on LinkedIn and posting multiple job openings from that company page on LinkedIn. We talked with Vaidehi Sankhe, who is one of the job seekers who protected herself from being scammed by these scammers and she shared some of the pointers which will help you identify if the particular company is fake or not. Below are the pointers -
- Do not rush to apply if you see any opening, particularly for freshers as they are targeted ones.
- Look at the company LinkedIn page first and check the following -
- Check if the website is appropriate or not
- Check the year when the organization was found - If it was found 10 years back or 5 years back and their website is still under construction then it is a sign that the company may be a fake company
- Check the media and the post sections -
- You see post are simply downloaded from Pinterest or any other online website
- Check if the employee photos are stolen from any other registered company
- List of people associated with organization
- The company is good if you see a good list of people associated with the company, but if you see only 2 to 3 members listed then it can be a fake company.
- Mostly you will 100% find a Founder or CEO. If you don't see it, the company can be fake.
- Check the logo of the company - Most of the time scammers just edit the logo of other organization.
- Lookout in the suggested companies section below the fraud company, sometimes those suggested companies are also fake (thanks to LinkedIn algorithm for finding similar companies).
- Never pay any money before getting your first salary to any organization. Usually, it is observed that the scammers are asking for document verification fees and then never reach out to you after getting that money or sometimes they ask for more money in the hope of providing the job.
